Colors and hearts explode in “Belle,” and your head might too while watching this gorgeous anime... As the shapes shift and mutate, Hosoda uses old-fashioned perspective — differing sizes and planes, parallel edges and vanishing points — to create an illusion of movement through depth.

Hosoda’s backdrops, with their soft colors and photorealist details, are always gorgeous enough to get lost in, but they also tell a deeper story of community and healing.

There’s too much plot for the film to manage, but its heart, and sumptuous art, are so firmly in the right place that its appeal comes through sweet and clear.

Not only is it an intriguing retelling of Beauty and the Beast, it’s also a moving story about overcoming grief and seeking help when everything seems lost. Though it tackles a little too much, Belle is a triumph. It will have you believe that no matter which world you’re in, there is still hope.

“Belle” is deeply attuned to its protagonist's hurts, memories and dreams. Every moment flits between her past and present, reality and virtual reality. These worlds ultimately merge in a scene of astounding catharsis — a song sung not by Belle, but Suzu — and it's one of the most intensely beautiful moments you're likely to see, anywhere.

Belle is an ultra-modern cautionary tale about social media and virtual reality... that encompasses naturalistic teen melodrama, tech-savvy mystery, clear-eyed commentary on the internet’s potentials and pitfalls, and—no joke—a remake of Disney’s Beauty And The Beast.

Hosoda has created an infinite-possibility universe in which to set this tale, and the at times convoluted story can’t help feeling limiting as our imaginations tease all the stuff being ignored in U’s more intriguing corners.

Belle can flounder in its pacing at times, often running through characters and events far too quickly for its own good, but it slows down at just the right moments, culminating in a final act that left me tearing up at everything it had to say, and how effectively it was able to explore the ideas of grief, love, loss, and acceptance without bordering on saccharine sweetness.

[W]ith a cast of characters this entertaining, art and animation this consistently awe-inspiring, and go-for-broke emotional swings from the off, Belle’s optimistic worldview proves beguiling.

Mamoru Hosoda‘s second anime movie Belle doesn’t disappoint and proves to be his most ambitious project to date. A visual feast that plays on classic fairy tales mixed with a touch of cyberbullying, Belle is a touching story full of charm and imagination.

“Belle” is stupendous work, a movie with old preoccupations (new bodies, false worlds, beauty shining light on decaying personae) but a sparkling new vision for them.

Hosoda’s story is about teen angst and getting out of your shell, and an atypically hopeful take on the Internet. There are the familiar images of humans gazing intimately into glowing devices, but his film is curiously less a finger-wagging warning than a frank, even optimistic view of the relationship young people have with life online...
