[A] parched little parable about small-town corruption in chokingly patriarchal rural Turkey... and featuring a manhunt that echoes a wild boar hunt and a mirage-like lake whose waters may or may not be toxic, here, the cool filmmaking is subtler than the metaphors.

Alper‘s screenplay grows increasingly repetitive, lapsing into a pattern of hazy dream sequences and hushed conversations over cigarettes, and even when mob justice rears its ugly head near the climax, Burning Days favours its various laboured metaphors rather than any satisfying denouements.

A highly-charged suspenser, a savvy piece of tightly-enclosed world-building and a sharp critique of machismo, populism and their very tangible dangers.

Alper’s plot often gets tangled in its own complexities; he indulges himself with exposition and with spectacle...

Burning Days is heavy-handed and slightly convoluted, but it makes pertinent observations about contemporary political decline away from the obvious and cynical variety, especially with its use of smartphone images and video leaks as a source of menace and blackmail.
