...The couple’s shared, yet isolating obsession is the embodiment of a Sisyphean ritual for which [...] the struggle itself is an act of conscious defiance and becomes ennobling. Framed against the atemporality of Bekir and Ugur’s quixotic, if self-destructive existence, the absurdity of their resolute, yet elusive eternal quest itself becomes a paradox, where transcendence lies, not in the pursuit of destiny, but in the struggle against it.

…While many of his films deal with moral issues and concerns, Demirkubuz never sets himself up as arbiter of his characters’ actions. He rarely takes sides, preferring instead to show how each character has his reasons for doing what he does. Here, Demirkubuz treats the twin obsessions of Bekir and Ugur with respect. They might be self-destructive or even delusional, but there’s a kind of innocence to their passion.

There's certainly no shortage of incident (much of it bloodily violent), and the picture is given a certain meaty, doom-laden intensity by the extremity of the inarticulate Bekir's dire (and largely self-inflicted travails). But in the end Destiny feels like a rather flimsily-constructed idea for a narrative, a gimmicky structure which buckles under the burden of Demirkubuz's fondness for weighty philosophical and psychological themes.

A minimalist by nature, who systematically purges all but the essential details, Demirkubuz devises his film as a series of long, harrowing sequences, tracing a process which starts with innocent hopefulness, proceeds into strife and struggle and ends in a dejected acceptance of passions that will never be satisfied…
