A now-rich woman returns to her poor desert hometown to propose a deal to the populace: her fortune, in exchange for the death of the man who years earlier abandoned her and left her with his child.

Visionary director Djibril Diop Mambéty (Touki Bouki) makes a feisty assault on economic imperialism in this loose adaptation of Friedrich Durrenmatt’s play, The Visit. Relocated to a Senegalese town, Hyenas is a comic, cutting critique of globalization conveyed with playful, imaginative flourish.

Mambéty never made another feature, although he did leave a 45-minute short meant to be part of a larger trilogy. A bold and splashy homage to Dakar’s street children, “The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun” (which can be streamed via Kanopy) is as affirmative as “Hyenas” is pessimistic.

The narrative moves at a different pace to European cinema, a languid, sun-beaten mood, with crisp, clear, bright visuals.
