John Hillcoat ABD, 2012
But Hillcoat skimps on the usual action kicks you might expect him to forgo thematic unity for as well, which throws you for a loop; instead he dawdles, probably in the hopes of elevating his clichés to myth. This charged, pregnant slowness, which would normally be irritating, distinguishes Lawless as an uneven but effective genre film.

For all the fussed-over detail and Benoit Delhomme’s stunning cinematography, Lawless really comes to life when the action starts to heat up and its tone locks into Pearce’s colorful, villainous performance. He’s more compelling than any of the heroes in a fine piece of pulp that sometimes trips over its hardcover aspirations.

It's all handled with a lot of cinematic brio, strong action and overall cheekiness.

The world that Lawless presents is so vivid and pleasing that we want to linger over the details. It’s a film that finds delicate beauty in the image of someone bleeding out in the snow, and turns a drunken, impulsive visit to church service into an overwhelming sensory experience. The appeal of Lawless is not the story it tells but rather the world that it creates.

A colorful, carefully paced, and deliriously violent update of gangster archetypes, it's the perfect bridge between the senseless blather of summer and the hollow pomposity of awards season.

It was when Guy Pearce showed up as the psychopath, nearly unrecognizable with middle-parted, slicked-back hair and barely visible eyebrows, that I mostly surrendered myself to the gory hokum. Cave’s screenwriting still lags a long way behind his songwriting, but he’s developing a facility for terse period dialogue, and he provides Hillcoat with ample opportunity to indulge in pleasantly ludicrous, testosterone-fueled mayhem.

Never-not-fun junk food enlivened by good actors (what Tom Hardy can do with a librarian sweater and a grunt!) and a thin ghosting of Hollywood-style "relevancy" (i.e.: the Depression-era rebel impulse to live outside a crooked system and broken economy draws parallels to today), but only barely enough actual substance to keep the shoot-'em-ups interesting.
