A melancholy look at love and the various ways in which people understand their connections to others, Passion has a neutral colour palette which serves as backdrop to vivid emotional impressions. It’s a stunning work for a filmmaker at the start of his career, and well worth revisiting now.

“Passion” has a low-fi, hangout feel, flush with the youthful indie energy and forgivable pretensions of an artist who believes that filmmaking matters. Hamaguchi is still a student but already finding his voice.

Passion isn’t as accomplished as subsequent Hamaguchi films, but it finds this gift in a chrysalis stage.
