ROBOCOP

José Padilha ABD, 2014
RoboCop is very smart, smarter than expected... Padilha gets some excellent shots (the best is a shot of Murphy's fractured family, with all three members visually trapped in different kinds of frames) but also seems to care about the issues, especially the whole emotion paradox...

The main thing wrong with "Robocop" is that it's dumb, and it's trashy, and it's both of those things in a not-good way, and it tries to cover its dumb trashiness with a veneer of "exciting" visuals and production value, and also the fact that its producers hired a group of very talented actors to inject some Very Talented Actor juice into their dumb trashy concoction.

José Padilha's reboot sacrifices much of the personality—the savage humor, the irreverent carnage—of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original. But when it comes to unnecessary remakes, isn't different better? Padilha, whose Elite Squad series did the cops-and-robbers genre right, has made his own movie—slightly squarer and less subversive than the other one, but also admirable in its refusal to simply replicate the circuitry of a blockbuster predecessor.

For the most part, [Padilha] handles the smaller-scale action scenes in "RoboCop" competently, if unremarkably, and the closer he gets to the actors, the better. The larger-scale scenes, with their churning violence and conspicuously computer-generated elements and camera movements, will have you reaching for your video game controller.

Junking Verhoeven's sledgehammer satire and outrageous ultraviolence in favor of real-world politics and PG-13 thrills, this is a slicker, shinier, admittedly inferior affair. But with a strong cast, a roaring pace and at least one genuinely unforgettable scene, it's by no means a write-off.

Maybe the presence of Michael K. Williams... clinches it, but the remake's satirical potential short-circuits under the looming influence of The Wire. Instead of depicting a world where traditional models of good and evil aren't so much interchangeable as they are fiscally irrelevant, the film accepts as a given that everyone's got their reasons—a valid point, but one hardly served justice against the cartoonish antics of both Novak and Michael Keaton's master-spinner CEO.

While RoboCop is a sleek and solidly constructed popcorn flick, it ultimately lacks originality — tinkering with your hero's iconic suit so he resembles a Teflon Power Ranger isn't going to cut it. Its hi-tech heart may be in the right place, but under ‎the controls of Brazilian director José Padilha, who deservedly landed this gig off the back of his excellent Elite Squad films, there's not a lot going on under the heavily polished chassis.

Shifting the prime target of its satire from corporate greed to post-9/11 jingoism, this well-cast, smarter-than-expected remake repairs much of the damage done to the iron-fisted lawman's reputation by meat-headed sequels and spinoffs; it's a less playful enterprise than the original, but meets the era's darker demands for action reboots with machine-tooled efficiency and a hint of soul.
