There’s such tenderness to the storytelling, such empathy and emotional depth, that it broadens the film’s potential audience from kids, who will respond to the cute characters and gentle wit, to adolescents and adults, who will recognise the angst and awkwardness of trying to function alone once again.

[W]hile it doesn’t have the production values of something by Pixar or Disney or DreamWorks, it will capture your heart. Sweet, charming, deeply moving….

The film strikes a very particular tone. It is easy to follow and entertaining in a way that speaks to children, but the emotions it deals with are adult ones. It riffs on romcom, sci-fi and horror tropes, and even plays with the cinematic frame in a surprising meta moment, but wears its references lightly, and is free of the irony and wisecracking that saturate so many family-oriented (and indeed adult) films today. Wistfulness hangs in the air.

The deceptively simple designs of Dog and Robot are made of clear lines and soft colours that recall the most appealing children’s picture book, but the team of animators (headed by animation director Benoît Féroumont) bring meticulous attention to detail to how these characters live on screen.

This is a sweet, fuzzy movie, possibly a little soft-hearted. Still, I dare anyone to watch the final moments without a lump in the throat.

This is visual storytelling at its finest, a traditional animation of gentle, unshowy genius.

Above all else, Berger’s film delights in the kind of eccentric, incidental sights and sounds from which dreams — human, animal or android — can spring.

This is a nine-Kleenex-box movie, and the surprise highlight of the Director’s Fortnight sidebar. You’ll never hear Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” the same way again.

Bolstered by the resilient spirit of New York City, this is one of the loveliest movies that you will see this year, animated or otherwise.

Its radiant colors and lucid conception of vulnerability in the face of a largely inconsiderate world, sink deep beneath the skin in the liminal space between the soul and the heart that can make animation such a wondrous medium. Berger’s “Robot Dreams” is its stunning reality.

[T]his often charming but patchy and sometimes slightly confusing work is likely to find a niche audience... But its wistful, melancholy tone won’t make it easy to market, especially as it doesn’t feel like it’s for either young children or for the slightly older crowd who are into racier, more potty-mouthed cartoonery like BoJack, Rick and Morty and the like.

In “Robot Dreams,” Berger’s knack for irreverent humor is laced with the influence of the silent era masters of physical comedy, namely Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, with the notable difference that a rich soundscape enlivens the environment.
