SHELLEY

Ali Abbasi Danimarka, 2016
["Shelley"] takes too long to intensify, but down the stretch it’s as disturbing as the scariest chapters of “What to Expect When You’re Expecting...” Like a lot of its “pregnancy is terrifying” predecessors though, “Shelley” is best when it feeds off new parents’ fear of the unknown. Add to that a layer of social critique — about how the privileged exploit their servants — and the movie offers a strong take on how evil can enter the world with alarmingly little gestation.

"Shelley" moves at a methodical pace so don’t be alarmed when frustrations set in, because it’s all drama without scares. Atmosphere and mood are the film’s strong suit, both growing thickly heavy as time elapses and strange occurrences commence. Our being left in the dark is effectively intentional, our minds racing to figure out truths that might not exist.

["Shelley"] is full of menace but devoid of monsters, a minimalist approach that is both intriguing and somewhat unsatisfying... Maybe expecting a horror film to have a point is expecting too much. In any case, ["Shelley's"] two actresses give committed performances on the way to a veiled ending.

Containing not one single jump scare, but building a disquieting atmosphere of dread that leads us to make some brilliantly gruesome inferences, ["Shelley"] is a classy take on the often trashy pregnancy horror category, with a subtle social critique underlying its neo-gothic texture.

An underdeveloped psychological horror exercise in which nothing adds up. A sinisterly picturesque location at the edge of a lake in an isolated forest supplies atmosphere aplenty, but that seems to be the only string on the bow of...Ali Abbasi’s debut, and he plucks it repeatedly to diminishing returns.

A thick soup of Lynchian malignancy and Gothic dread. While ["Shelley" is] perhaps too intent on withholding narrative keys in favor of unsettling atmospherics, on the latter front it doesn’t disappoint, with a compelling cast that keeps the fear factor high even if we’re never really let in on where its roots lie.
