Exuberant, beautifully crafted, [and] ultimately moving... [The Color Purple is] a sanitised version of Spielberg’s film, let alone Walker’s novel. But bravura musical sequences and a top-notch cast ensure smiles and tears come the end credits.

The prime success of the new movie version of “The Color Purple” is its tone: it plays like legend, filtered through the pleasure and the pain of the telling... Barrino, amazingly, has her first major-movie role in [the film] and she commands the frame as if it were made to order.

The movie is lively and fun, without betraying the heavy undertones of some of its subject matter. It’s a reclamation, but a buoyant rather than somber one... Reimagining Walker’s novel, and Spielberg’s film version, as a musical was a stroke of genius, a way of steering the story out of trauma-porn territory and into a world of hope and celebration.

For both movie and play, it feels as much like a trip to church as it is a trip to the theater.

The craft is gorgeous, but “The Color Purple” would be nothing without its star turns, and Bazawule’s cast takes your breath away... While it tackles dark material, over the course of its journey, [the film] will make you want to stand up and cheer, again and again.

The new life in this adaptation of The Color Purple is still worth revisiting, with performances from a stacked ensemble that help the film rise above being a straightforward adaptation.

Bazawule has ditched the starkness of the novel and, together with screenwriter Marcus Gardley, brought forward its melodramatic elements. Of all the versions I've seen, the latest one is the best, a holiday spectacle bursting with spirited sisterhood.
