The storyline is so predictable, in fact, that despite Lafosse’s skills at crafting a scene the narrative simply leaves you wanting. The actors, on the other hand, carry most of your attention because they simply have to.

An impressively nuanced portrait of the three-way relationship between a man, a woman and his disease. While not a picture which is formally risk-taking in approach, this is a quality production which explores its uncomfortable subject matter with sensitivity and uncommon depth.

Although Bonnard’s performance is the standout for its physicality and understanding of bipolar disorder, Bekhti matches him all the way... It’s an emotional but never overwrought drama, and puts to bed the idea that geniuses always have to suffer for their art.

Few filmmakers in recent cinema have tackled angst, anxiety and more damaging psychological conditions with the precision of Lafosse... The Restless offers no vaccines or easy solutions for the sickness depicted at its core, but instead proposes that we learn to live with it for worse and perhaps for better.

In keeping with the most personal of [Lafosse's] previous films, “Private Lessons” and “After Love,” it’s not one of those filmmaking-as-therapy grudge sessions, but a wrenchingly fair-minded look at complicated family dynamics.

This sad and painful movie takes us round and round, circling the drain of despair but never quite going down. In narrative terms it never really develops any of its characters or relationships, yet its two utterly heartfelt lead performances make this a grimly authentic spectacle.

This unsensationalized portrait only sustains the drama for so long. As the film progresses, Lafosse starts utilizing several tiresome “tortured genius” tropes to illustrate the relationship between Damien and his artwork, with Bonnard’s performance relying increasingly on specific behavioral tics as the story progresses.

The performances, direction and script help the audience to see both sides of the story; credit to the director and his team of co-writers for their sympathetic approach to their characters... It’s a class act that explores the challenges of accepting and living with a condition — and it does so with a glimmer of hope for humanity and relationships.

Both actors are riveting in this sad duet, and Lafosse isn’t much interested in giving them a facile reconciliation. Everything is hard in “The Restless,” a potent drama that never quite succumbs to dread but always keeps it close at hand.

It’s a deeply human film, full of the wonder and pain of family life – with the pain sometimes threatening to take over entirely... It’s a film that oozes clear-eyed empathy and has the lived-in feel of a story, director and cast working in strong harmony.
