The film inspires a sense of growing helplessness and a sense of discomfort in familiar spaces. Much of the film's effectiveness lies in how the filmmakers keep the aggressors out of sight, lending them a much more awe-inspiring power. The film's best scare is ocular and plays up the untrustworthy eeriness of keyholes.
