But once you grasp the substance of the film early on, there isn’t much else left to discover about these characters or their situations. Without the intellectual rigor to match, Women Talking feels like a long, long conversation indeed.

However easy it is to admire Polley’s efforts to provide an example of the solidarity and courage it takes to build a better world, that alone doesn’t equate to good filmmaking. Women Talking doesn’t meet the moment so much as show up for it.

Polley admirably allows her fine performers ample space to bring Women Talking to life. But there are also the bigger needs of the film to be considered—sometimes Polley’s actorly generosity comes at a cost, when the film turns stage-y for a minute and we’re snapped out of its enveloping spell.

Women Talking will speak to the #MeToo movement, but it’s a testament to Polley’s intelligence as a filmmaker that she refuses to give viewers a blandly inspirational tale. Indeed, Women Talking is a challenging work that requires a little patience from the audience, who will be rewarded with a troubling, provocative story that lingers in the mind long after the film is over.

As sharply honed and concentrated as it is, “Women Talking” has a remarkable formal and conceptual fluidity... [By the end, the film] gathers extraordinary emotional force, and also something more: genuine spiritual weight. Polley has made an angry, compassionate parable of Christian belief and female empowerment — two forces, often thought to be irreconcilable, that are shown here to be intrinsically bound.

Toews’ book could easily have been made into a play, but every widescreen frame of Polley’s film will make you glad that it wasn’t. She infuses this truth-inspired tale with a gripping multi-generational sweep from the very first line, which puts the violence in the rear-view mirror and begins the hard work of keeping it there.

Dense isn’t always used as a compliment when describing a movie, but in the case of “Women Talking” it’s a badge of honor. Polley is tackling numerous social dynamics among the women as well as a number of contemporary themes... The fact it turns out to be so engaging cinematically is a pleasant surprise.

“Women Talking” is unlike any film you’ve seen before... [Yet] Polley has miscalculated something in the way she presents this particular conversation. As high-stakes as it all is, neither the urgency nor the anger comes through.

Women is billed in the title card, tellingly, as "An act of female imagination." When it lifts away from its more formal constraints, imagination almost feels like too soft a word for this fierce, sometimes inscrutable film; it's an act of will.

You often wish Luc Montpellier’s cinematography were also a match for all the verbal sumptuousness on display... Luckily, “Women Talking” is a deeply textured experience otherwise, one that imagines a peaceful world where feminine sensibilities call the shots rather than the ill-advised impulses and unbridled emotions of men.

The philosophical and sometimes faith-steeped bent of the women’s discussion might put off audiences not willing to go there. For those ready to take the leap, the thoughtful and beautifully lensed feature is a rewarding exploration that addresses not just the characters’ predicament but the existential questions that face any contemporary woman navigating patriarchal setups.
