MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE

Harold P. Warren USA, 1966
Warren plainly had a lifetime of psychological torment and feelings of oedpial inadequacy he couldn't properly translate to the mythological horror movie he saw in his head. But unlike Henry Darger's or Loy Allen Bowlin's, this work doesn't look like a window into its creator's soul. It just looks like one of the strangest bad movies of all time. And yet it remains a fascinatingly frustrating object that must be seen to be believed.

Much has been written on MANOS, nearly all of it supporting the proposition that it is not merely bad but amazingly bad, a film admirable and remarkable precisely because it is a contender for the worst film ever made. It is not the worst film ever made. In fact, it is extraordinary, a mesmerizing and precious piece of film history.
