The Wolf House undoubtedly has sharp and fascinating points to make... But those messages get lost in a slow-moving avalanche of undeniably impressive images that never quite touch the emotions in the way they are meant.

As fascinating as the film’s production process proves, it’s the results of their creative labours that entrance and enchant. Loving Vincent might have given the world it’s first fully painted movie, but The Wolf House gifts animation that strides the line between beautiful and grotesque, that builds and crumples as the camera rolls.

“The Wolf House” takes the age-old story of the Three Little Pigs and filters it through the warped mind of a profoundly traumatized little girl until it no longer resembles a fable so much as it does the final minutes of “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.”

[The film's] visual landscape is unlike any I’ve experienced, and though everything about it is aggressively repellant, it still managed to hold me in a constant state of gobsmacked awe.

Joaquín Cociña and Cristobal León, did the ultra-painstaking animation themselves and it’s a wonder they weren’t driven insane in the process... These filmmakers have a perspective and a voice that feels entirely new. The film surprises, with incredible force, in every one of its 75 minutes.

This shape-shifting, trippy nightmare... startles and terrifies in equal measure, while putting forth an uncompromising examination of fascism in a way that only animation can do. Audiences will frequently ask themselves, “How on earth did they pull that off?”

So much of The Wolf House feels like a hallucinatory, out-of-body experience for the way the camera slides in and out of Maria’s point of view, mimicking a single take. Directors Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña use an entire house as a canvas for their astonishing artistry, mingling sculptures and paintings with life-sized objects.

Visually engrossing, reference-rich and disturbing... [The Wolf House] makes for an unsettling viewing experience, a creative tour de force whose endlessly fascinating visuals are deliberately seductive and repellent in equal measure.

A decidedly adult stop-motion animation, whose psychological portent is mysterious and dense, while its imaginative use of puppetry and bold animated design creates a world entirely its own, relatively rarely seen in contemporary cinema.
