ESSENTIAL FILMS BY WOMEN

IN TIERS, FIRSTLY IN REVERSE YEAR ORDER, WITH AN ELITE TO START. Last, largest tier still being rearranged from usual order as the list had been in, taking some time! Placings based on various polls, lists, selections, awards, ratings etc, especially on Mubi and the latest major international Sight & Sound poll, with leeway for hidden treasures and personal taste.

The list is intended as a manageable selection and a guide for where best to start. Comments, suggestions welcome. Not on Mubi: Gentle as Moss on Stone.
