For the past twelve years—with the exception of the pandemic-cancelled 2020 edition—I have tried to gather all the existing posters for the films competing for the Palme d’Or at Cannes. This year, in the run up to the festival, there seemed to be fewer posters than ever for the 21 films in competition and so I decided to look further afield to the other sections of the festival, as well as to the rival Directors’ Fortnight. In those other sections there turned out to be many more interesting and fully realized posters, such as Midnight Marauder’s elegant design for Marie Kreutzer’s Corsage in Un Certain Regard, or Piotr Gruszczyński’s illustrated poster for the Ukrainian film Pamfir, which premiered in the Fortnight. The Competition itself did have a few standouts, my favorite of all being Aneta Gebska and Filip Gebski’s design for Jerzy Skolimowski’s Bresson update EO. I’m not at Cannes myself so there may be some posters fluttering on the Croisette that have not yet come to my attention, but, giant billboards for the likes of Top Gun: Maverick aside, Cannes isn’t really a poster friendly venue so I am fairly confident that I’ve seen the best that Cannes 2022 has to offer to date. Let me know otherwise in the comments below. And so, with the festival coming to a close this weekend, I hereby present, in alphabetical order, my own Palmes for the Ten Best Posters of Cannes 2022.
