A love letter to cinema and a soothing overview of life’s critical moments... Kim Cho-hee has put to good use her insider knowledge of the industry, without exceeding in movie snobbism, to create a humorous character in turmoil and a story of transition and hope.

"Lucky Chan-sil" is not merely a collection of self-reflexive jokes about the Korean film industry. The sadness and existential dread at the heart of the hilarity are as real as the jokes and references are funny. The combination makes for a beautiful result, indebted to Hong’s particular brand of cinema but clearly also in Kim’s own voice.

A charming ode to the way cinema shapes lives even though there’s oodles of struggle before getting there. It is the inbetween that make sure that Kim Choo-hee’s film remains an enjoyable fair that doesn’t resort to melodrama.

With its awkward but honest interactions and dialogue, "Lucky Chan-sil" is a humorous and candid film that doesn’t aspire to condemn gender norms in Korea. Instead, the film provides an encouraging and refreshing view of independent, career-oriented women.

"Lucky Chan-sil" manages to avoid devolving into a semi-autobiography. The character isn’t a puppet, but a fully-fledged being with her own agency... [The film] is a cool hillside breeze that asks nothing of you but to still your heart and mind for these 96 minutes.
