A selection of notable, popular and landmark British films and TV programmes, with some personal taste involved too. In year order, most essential first. I’m not including Peter Watkins’ excellent Edvard Munch, which is Scandinavian, or Hitchcock’s Rebecca, or The Great Escape, but I am including Dr Strangelove, 2001, and Nic Roeg’s Walkabout, in Australia, which is a mixed nationality production starring Jenny Agutter. The Shining simply feels too American, Alien touch and go.
David Attenborough’s natural history TV series are magnificent and monumental, Michael Palin’s travel series marvellous too. Both men are international treasures.
