Movie Poster of the Week: The Posters of the 51st New York Film Festival

An annual round-up of posters for films in the Main Slate of the NYFF.

Under new management, namely the esteemed leadership of critic/filmmaker/programmer Kent Jones, the 51st New York Film Festival hunkers down into the starting blocks today. As in recent years (see 2012,  2011 and 2010), I have endeavored to gather posters for all 36 films in the Festival’s prestigious main slate. I wasn’t able to find anything for Catherine Breillat’s Abuse of Weakness, Fred Wiseman’s At Berkeley, James Franco’s Child of God (he’s probably busy designing and screenprinting it himself), James Gray’s The Immigrant, Ralph Fiennes’ The Invisible Woman or agnes b.’s My Name is Hmmm..., but I have managed to find keyart, in various stages of development, for 30 other films. Poster-wise, the standout has to be this Fauvist provocation above (banned in certain French cities this past summer) by artist Tom de Pekin for Alain Guiraudie’s Stranger by the Lake. A close runner-up is that stark silhouette for Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, below, which turns Bruce Dern’s hairline into an Ansel Adams landscape. 

The rest I present in alphabetical order by English-language title. And do not adjust your sets, these first two really are in the New York Film Festival...

Wonderful collection. Surprisingly, the one that really caught my attention is “The Last of the Unjust”. I find it very haunting. Thx.
