Another good day for The Social Network. David Fincher may be sharing the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Best Director award with Olivier Assayas (whose Carlos also wins Best Foreign Language Film and is the runner-up for Best Picture), but otherwise, it's won Best Picture, Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross share the Best Music/Score award with The Ghost Writer's Alexandre Desplat.
Best Actress: Kim Hye-ja in Bong Joon-ho's Mother. Best Actor: Colin Firth in Tom Hooper's The King's Speech. A couple of surprises in the Best Supporting categories: Niels Arestrup for A Prophet and Jacki Weaver and Animal Kingdom. Best Cinematography: Matthew Libatique for Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan. Best Production Design: Guy Hendrix Dyas for Christopher Nolan's Inception.
Lixin Fan's Last Train Home wins Best Documentary. Best Animated Film: Lee Unkrich's Toy Story 3. The Douglas E Edwards Award for Independent/Experimental Film/Video goes to Jean-Luc Godard's Film Socialism. A New Generation award goes to Lena Dunham for Tiny Furniture. One Legacy of Cinema award goes to Serge Bromberg "for his preservation efforts, including his work on Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno," and another to the FW Murnau Foundation and Fernando Pena for the restoration of Metropolis.
At indieWIRE, Peter Knegt lists all the runners-up — and reports that the American Film Institute has presented its annual list of the ten best films of the year. In alphabetical order: Black Swan, David O. Russell's The Fighter, Inception, Lisa Cholodenko's The Kids Are All Right, Danny Boyle's 127 Hours, The Social Network, Ben Affleck's The Town, Toy Story 3, Joel and Ethan Coen's True Grit and Debra Granik's Winter's Bone. Special Awards go to The King's Speech and Davis Guggenheim's Waiting for "Superman".
The Social Network has scored well with the Boston Society of Film Critics, too: Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor (Jesse Eisenberg) and Best Use of Music in a Film (Reznor and Ross). Black Swan's won two awards: Natalie Portman (Best Actress) and Andrew Weisblum (Best Film Editing). The Fighter wins two: Christian Bale (Best Supporting Actor) and Best Ensemble Cast. And Marwencol wins two: Best Documentary and Best New Filmmaker (Jeff Malmberg). The other awards: Juliette Lewis, Best Supporting Actress for Conviction; Roger Deakins, Best Cinematography for True Grit; Mother, Best Foreign Film; and Toy Story 3, Best Animated Film.
The New York Film Critics Online also like The Social Network: Best Picture, Director and Screenplay. Black Swan picks up Best Actress (Portman), Cinematography (Libatique) and Score (Clint Mansell). Best Actor goes to James Franco for 127 Hours. Both Supporting awards go to The Fighter (Bale and Melissa Leo). Best Documentary: Banksy's Exit Through the Gift Shop. Foreign Film: Luca Guadagnino's I Am Love. Breakthrough Performer: Noomi Rapace, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Debut Feature: John Wells, The Company Men. Ensemble: The Kids Are All Right.
